Decolonial boat

Tipo de proyecto

objects

On 12 October, Spain celebrates the day of the discovery of America. This decolonial boat is entitled Nothing to Celebrate, as 1492 marked the beginning of South America's 500-year colonial history.
To make this piece, I used palm bark, cotton thread, paper, and tea bags produced in India. When the conquistadors set foot on American soil, they thought they were in India, which is why they called the people of the new continent ‘Indians.’

The writer Eduardo Galeano has a beautiful explanation of what the conquest of America was like.
"In 1492, the natives discovered that they were Indias, they discovered that they lived in America, they discovered that they were naked, they discovered that they discovered that they owed obedience to a king and queen from another world and to a god from another sky, and that this god had invented guilt and clothing and had ordered that anyone who worshipped the sun and the moon and the earth and the rain that wets it should be burned alive."

Step into a creative space where threads, textures, and colors weave together stories of culture, identity, and imagination. My work blends traditional drawing techniques with contemporary textile practices.
