The name of this hand-knitted sculptures is "Penélopes", they are knitted by hand with needles and wool or cotton yarn.
The ‘Penélopes’ project consisted of knitting endless cylindrical shapes with a group of women from the Andes mountains.
For three months, six women with whom I regularly worked making jumpers from Ecuador to export to Europe met twice a week for two days. The idea was to knit without knowing what for. My desire was to create a project that would allow these women to knit without having to count the stitches needed to shape the commercial garments they were commissioned to make.
Although these women were initially reluctant to participate in the experiment, but, since they were still being paid their wages, they start relaxing and we managed to create a chill out space for dialogue and good humour, which resulted in a series of white sculptures knitted with a stitch called ‘cell’.
